Affiliate Channel Faces Elimination
Google has moved to substantially shrink the affiliate marketing channel for iGaming operators by extending gambling advertising prohibitions directly to affiliate networks and content creators. The policy, announced this week with a November 15 effective date, prohibits any promotional content linking to or advertising iGaming products from appearing in Google Search results, YouTube video recommendations, or Display Network partner sites.
The change essentially closes off what had been a semi-permissive loophole where affiliates could rank content through organic or paid channels and monetize through operator commission structures. Affiliate networks including Awin, Impact, and CJ Affiliate have already begun issuing compliance notices to their iGaming publisher bases.
Industry Response and Contingencies
Operator and affiliate industry representatives quickly responded with concern. Affiliate-sourced player acquisition represents 15-25% of customer volume for mid-tier iGaming operators, particularly in English-language markets (UK, US, Australia). The policy effectively forces a rapid reallocation of marketing budgets toward Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and email-based acquisition channels that remain permissive of gambling promotion.
Major affiliate networks are already exploring compliant content verticals for their publisher bases—affiliate sites covering sports news, fantasy sports, and gaming culture can technically reference operators in editorial context, though traffic attribution and affiliate commission tracking become far more complex.
Strategic Implications
Operators with in-house affiliate management capabilities face the least disruption; they can transition commission-paying relationships to non-Google traffic sources (TikTok influencer partnerships, Reddit communities, email list rentals). Smaller operators and startups that relied on low-cost affiliate acquisition are more exposed and will face material CAC (customer acquisition cost) increases.
This policy also reflects broader regulatory pressure on Google from gambling authorities globally. UK Gambling Commission and EU regulators have repeatedly cited online gambling advertising as a harm vector, particularly targeting younger demographics. By restricting affiliate content, Google preempts regulatory action while maintaining operator direct advertising (which remains permitted under strict qualification criteria in regulated markets).
Longer-term, expect similar policy moves from Meta and TikTok as gambling regulation tightens globally. Operators should begin stress-testing their CAC economics against affiliate channel loss and plan diversified acquisition strategies now.
